The Universal Stellar Mass–stellar Metallicity Relation for Dwarf Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present spectroscopic metallicities of individual stars in seven gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs), and we show that dIrrs obey the same mass–metallicity relation as the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of both the Milky Way and M31: Z∗ ∝ M 0.30±0.02 ∗ . The uniformity of the relation is in contradiction to previous estimates of metallicity based on photometry. This relationship is roughly continuous with the stellar mass–stellar metallicity relation for galaxies as massive as M∗ = 10 M⊙. Although the average metallicities of dwarf galaxies depend only on stellar mass, the shapes of their metallicity distributions depend on galaxy type. The metallicity distributions of dIrrs resemble simple, leaky box chemical evolution models, whereas dSphs require an additional parameter, such as gas accretion, to explain the shapes of their metallicity distributions. Furthermore, the metallicity distributions of the more luminous dSphs have sharp, metal-rich cut-offs that are consistent with the sudden truncation of star formation due to ram pressure stripping. Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملOn Extending the Mass-metallicity Relation of Galaxies by 2.5 Decades in Stellar Mass
We report 4.5 μm luminosities for 27 nearby (D . 5 Mpc) dwarf irregular galaxies measured with the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We have constructed the 4.5 μm luminosity-metallicity (L–Z) relation for 25 dwarf galaxies with secure distance and interstellar medium oxygen abundance measurements. The 4.5 μm L–Z relation is 12+log(O/H) = (5.78 ± 0.21) + (−0.122 ± 0.012) M[4.5], where M[4.5] is th...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملThe Mass-metallicity Gradient Relation of Early-type Galaxies
We present a newly observed relation between galaxy mass and radial metallicity gradients of earlytype galaxies. Our sample of 51 early-type galaxies encompasses a comprehensive mass range from dwarf to brightest cluster galaxies. The metallicity gradients are measured out to one effective radius by comparing nearly all of the Lick absorption-line indices to recent models of single stellar popu...
متن کاملMass-Metallicity Relations for Nearby Dwarf Irregular Galaxies
For a sample of 25 dwarf irregular galaxies with distances D ∼ < 5 Mpc and measured oxygen abundances, we present results derived from galaxy luminosities at 4.5 μm and stellar masses from near-infrared imaging with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We have constructed the appropriate luminosity-metallicity (L–Z) and mass-metallicity (M–Z) relations, and compared these relations with their c...
